20 things you’ve got to love about the south!

by Mark O. Conway

1. Okra is eaten in any and all ways, shapes and forms-fried, boiled, pickled, stewed, whole pods, chopped up... any way we can get it.

2. Paula Deen is our answer to Martha Stewart -and a hell of a lot more fun to watch!

3. STOP means ‘Slow down some'. YIELD means ‘Gun it and get ahead of that other car'.

4. All plants ending in "-ea"--azaleas, camellias, gardenias, magnolias, hydrangreas-and their indiscriminant use in the landscape.

5. Well, you might not love it, but Southern women WILL shoot you if you mess with them.

6. The multiple uses of the expression ‘mess'. For example; "I picked a mess of collard greens from the garden today." or "Don't mess that up, we're having company." or "I was just gonna mess with it to see if I can get it working." or "Oh, he's messing around out back." and so on.

7. Dirt roads.

8. Big hair, long nails, heavy eyeliner, tight clothes-is Amy Winehouse from the South?

9. The glorious, redundant and unapologetic use of the expression, "Ya'll".

10. Shrimp eaten in any way, shape....well just see #1, OK?

11. The sheer number of churches. We will put a church anywhere. If that Circle K on the corner closes, we'll put a church in it. If that wig shop goes out of business, we will put a church in. A gun shop CAN become a church in the South.

12. Cadillacs and Lincolns are still considered ‘prestige' vehicles.

13. White folks who talk like black folks. The opposite does not apply.

14. Britney Spears???

15. "Heeyyy!" is our equivalent of ‘hi', ‘hello', ‘good morning', ‘good afternoon', ‘how are you?',etc.

16. Starbuck's still cannot be found on every corner in the South-but they are a'coming!

17. When we talk about "the Yankees", it is not the baseball team we're referring to.

18. Trailers are trailers NOT ‘mobile homes'.

19. New Orleans will rise again and it will still be a big mess-- just the way we like it.

20. ‘Green" describes the lawn, money, inexperience or something revolving around St. Patrick's Day, not an environmental movement.
